We are pleased to present the highlights of the workshop "The Future that Will Have Been". This was organized by documenta Institute in collaboration with the Art and Culture Development Foundation of Uzbekistan.

The workshop was designed as part of the preparation for the Aral Culture Summit, which will take place in October 2023.

Over the course of three days, participants crafted their sci-fi stories, guided by tutors Mi You, Patricia Reed, Rahesh Ram, Yulia Gromova, and Gary Zhexi Zhang. The workshop provided a unique opportunity to learn more about the Karakalpak region and explore the ecological and cultural narratives around it.

"The Future that Will Have Been" used science fiction and fantasy literature as a mythopoetic tool that allowed the participants to anticipate a future where natural and human history converge. They developed their stories based on the rich Kakalpak science fiction literature from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.

In the next phase, the insights and experiences gained during the workshop will be compiled into a publication that will make the corpus of early Karakalpak science fiction available to a wider audience, along with the newly produced novels.
