Political upheavals, economic inequalities, ideological struggles—all of these are reflected in the arts. In her book Art in a Multipolar World, Mi You analyzes how art becomes an arena in which geopolitical tensions are played out and interpretive authority is negotiated. The focus is on documenta fifteen: as a focal point of political shifts, it made global conflicts over representation and solidarity visible in Kassel; it ultimately became a battleground itself. Mi You broadens the perspective by contrasting this with the changing role of art in China, which makes multipolarity understandable as a contest for global norms.
No registration required, free admission.
The lecture will be in English, but questions may also be asked in German.
