Essay: Notes from the Aral Sea

Review of the workshop "The Future That Will Have Been"

In his essay No Culture In A Dry World, Hutch Wilco reports on his impressions gathered during the workshop The Future That Will Have Been in the summer of 2023. At this workshop, a group of interested scholars (including Mi You, Gary Zhexi Zhang, Yulia Gromova, Patricia Reed and Rahesh Ram) traveled to the Karakalpak region of Uzbekistan to explore the unique ecological conditions and cultural history of the area. The prevailing environmental and cultural conditions later served as inspiration for science fiction scenarios that explore further possibilities for the future of the Aral Sea.The workshop was organized by the documenta Institute in cooperation with the Art and Culture Development Foundation of Uzbekistan.
