Recap: Critical Fabulations of documenta

With the symposium “Critical Fabulations of documenta” on July 9 and 10, two days of intensive discussions, new perspectives, and stimulating encounters come to an end.

We would like to sincerely thank all the speakers who contributed to a lively exchange on critical narratives within documenta research, as well as the chairs and attendees for stimulating discussions during the symposium.

The symposium has shown how relevant the engagement with gaps, omissions, and suppressed stories in the narratives surrounding documenta is – even in the run-up to documenta 16.

Symposium: Critical Fabulations of documenta

The symposium "Critical Fabulations of documenta" is about the gaps, omissions, and suppressed histories in the narratives surrounding documenta. Rather than treating these absences as deficits, it understands them as productive starting points for rethinking its history. At its core are those voices, images, and narratives that have been marginalised, overlooked, or never fully made visible in the official histories of the exhibition. Instead of seeking a linear or complete account of documenta,
