Recap: Art – Exhibition – Discourse. Art and theoretical discourse at the documenta and other venues of contemporary art

From June 25 to 27, 2026, the conference “Art – Exhibition – Discourse” brought together scholars, artists, and interested members of the public to discuss the role of theoretical discourses in contemporary art.

Over three consecutive days, five panels covered a wide range of topics, from aesthetic theory to exhibitions as media of knowledge, to questions regarding institutional conditions, political practice, and documenta as a global space for discourse.

The conference demonstrated how productive the dialogue between art and theory can be and how relevant it is in the run-up to documenta 16.
