Maria Neumann & Jutta Braun: Kunst + Geschichte – Perspektiven der Forschung

For some time now, contemporary historical research has increasingly turned its attention to the field of art. In their three-part dossier “Art + History: Perspectives on Research” for zeitgeschichte|online, Jutta Braun and Maria Neumann specifically address the tension between contemporary history and art history in three steps: First, they examine the significance of the art world for the post-Nazi era and the self-image of postwar West German society. Second, they focus on the fundamental methodological question of the specific relationship between artwork and biography, as well as the consequences this has had—and continues to have—for curatorial practice and (art) historical reflection in the Federal Republic of Germany. Finally, third, the study discusses how the scholarly findings of contemporary historical research on art funding and artistic positions on the politics of the past can be productively related to one another.
